PPT2000: Cannot Save Presentation Broadcast Files to URL Address

ID: Q226620

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you schedule your presentation to be broadcasted and try to type in a valid Internet address, you get one of the following error messages:

'URL' is not a shared directory. A shared directory should be in the form of '\\servername\sharename'
or
You cannot use an internet address here. Enter a path that points to a location on your computer or on the network.
Where URL is a valid web address in the form of 'HTTP://servername/sharename'

CAUSE

PowerPoint will only accept UNC addresses (Universal Naming Convention) for the Online Broadcasting shared folder.

WORKAROUND

To workaround this problem, save your broadcast files to the UNC path of your server, then alter the invitation email to have the correct URL address for the web site on that server.

How to Alter an Address in Outlook 2000

  1. Type in the UNC address to the server in the Server Options window.

  2. Click OK.

  3. Click the Schedule Broadcast button.

  4. When the schedule request email appears, you can edit the URL text from 'file:///\\servername\sharename\filename.htm' to 'http://Webserver/sharename/filename.htm'. Where the web address in part corresponds to the UNC location.
