PPT2000: Page Up and Page Down Keys Seem to Behave Inconsistently

ID: Q226679

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you press Page Down while you are editing a PowerPoint presentation, you may receive inconsistent results.

For example: Sometimes, you will move to the next slide in the presentation, from slide 2 to slide 3. At other times, you may move from slide 2 to another, seemingly random slide, from slide 2 to slide 40 for example. At other times, these keys will not change the active slide.

The Page Up key behaves in a similar manner.

CAUSE

The Page Up and Page Down keys behave differently depending upon which pane of Normal View is active.

RESOLUTION

The active pane can be determined by looking on the status bar. The status bar is in the lower-left corner of the Microsoft PowerPoint window. It will contain one of the following indicators:

NOTE: If the status bar is not visible, it may be disabled. To activate the status bar in PowerPoint, from the Tools menu, click Options. On the View tab, click to select the Status bar check box, and click OK.

  • Slide X of Y - This indicates that the Slide pane is active. If you press Page Down, the active slide changes to the next slide in the presentation. If you press Page Up, it will change to the previous slide.

  • NOTE: Where X is the active slide, and Y is the total number of slides in your presentation.

  • Outline - This indicates that the Outline pane is active. If you pressing Page Down, the active slide will change to the first slide on the next page of the outline, or to the last slide if there is less than one page of outline left. If you pressing Page Up, the active slide will change to the slide one page before the currently selected slide, or to the first slide, if less than one page of outline is available.

  • Slide Notes - This indicates that the Notes pane is active, and the active slide will not change when you press Page Down or Page Up. These keys will change the cursor position within the Notes pane.

To change the active pane, click anywhere within the desired pane to activate it. The shortcut keys for changing the active pane follow:
  • F6 - F6 activate the next pane in clockwise order. (from Slide, to Slide Notes, to Outline)

  • SHIFT+F6 - SHIFT+F6 activates the next pane in counterclockwise order. (from Slide, to Outline, to Slide Notes)

STATUS

This behavior is by design.
