PPT2000: ORK2000: Alternate Browser Alert Does Not Display

ID: Q226741

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
  • Microsoft Office 2000 Resource Kit

IMPORTANT: This article contains information about editing the registry. Before you edit the registry, make sure you understand how to restore it if a problem occurs. For information about how to do this, view the "Restoring the Registry" Help topic in Regedit.exe or the "Restoring a Registry Key" Help topic in Regedt32.exe.

SYMPTOMS

After you create the following registry key for customized browser alerts and then you view your Web presentation in Netscape Navigator 4.x or Communicator 4.x, you will see the default alert message instead of your custom message.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9\Common\Internet\AlternatePP9BrowserAlert

CAUSE

This occurs when the text entered into the previously mentioned registry key exceeds 255 characters. This is the limit on the size of a registry string key.

WORKAROUND

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

Reduce the Length of the String Key

To reduce the length of the string key, follow these steps:
  1. Start Registry Editor (Regedt32.exe).

  2. Locate the AlternatePP9BrowserAlert value under the following key in the registry:

    HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9\Common\Internet\

  3. On the Edit menu, click String, rewrite the string so that it is 255 or fewer characters long, and then click OK.

  4. Exit Registry Editor.

The new custom alert should now display when viewed under Netscape or other browsers.
