PPT2000: Bitmaps Display Upside Down or Mirrored in Web Browser

SYMPTOMS

When you view a PowerPoint presentation that has been saved as a Web page, some bitmap images may be displayed upside-down or displayed as a mirror image.

CAUSE

You are able to flip vector-based clipart within PowerPoint. Bitmap files will not flip inside PowerPoint. If you have a bitmap and a vector clipart grouped or selected together, the flip options are available on the Draw menu. If you attempt to flip a group, the vector clipart will flip and the bitmap will not. However, both pictures will be flagged as flipped when this happens.

When the presentation is saved as HTML, the bitmap is flipped, because it has flagged to be flipped by PowerPoint.

RESOLUTION

The bitmap must be flipped again, or reinserted inside PowerPoint. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Open your HTML file inside PowerPoint.



2. Click the bitmap that appears flipped in your Web browser.



3. Press SHIFT, then click on an autoshape so that the autoshape and the bitmap are both selected.


NOTE: If no autoshape is available, you can draw a rectangle or circle by clicking the appropriate icon on the Drawing toolbar.


4. On the Draw menu, point to Rotate or Flip, and click Flip Horizontal or Flip Vertical.



• If the bitmap is upside-down in your Web browser, click Flip Vertical.



• If the bitmap is a mirror image in your Web browser, click Flip Horizontal.



5. Save your presentation as a Web page. The bitmap should now appear normally.
   
   NOTE: If you had to create an autoshape in step three, delete the autoshape.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 2000.

Bitmaps are pictures made from a series of small dots (pixels) that form shapes and lines. Bitmaps are created with paint programs, such as Microsoft Paint, or by scanning an image. Bitmaps cannot be converted to PowerPoint objects, although they can be scaled, cropped, and recolored by using the tools on the Picture toolbar.

Vector clipart pictures are made from mathematic definitions of points, or nodes, that create lines and shape areas. Vector clipart pictures are created with Drawing or CAD programs, and several of these types of pictures are included with the Microsoft Clip Art Gallery. Vector clipart pictures can usually be converted to PowerPoint objects. They can be ungrouped, scaled, and recolored. Once they are ungrouped, individual components of these pictures can be modified separately.
