PPT2000: How To Re-register PowerPoint 2000

ID: Q237700

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000

SUMMARY

When you start PowerPoint 2000 for Windows, it does not make sure that all the keys it writes to the Windows 9x or Windows NT Registry are correct. Many of the PowerPoint keys can be missing or corrupt, and PowerPoint will not automatically correct them. This behavior is different from previous versions of PowerPoint and is intended to improve PowerPoint 2000's performance.

To be sure that you are registering PowerPoint 2000 correctly, you should use the PowerPoint 2000 or Office 2000 Setup program.

MORE INFORMATION

If you have trouble opening files with a .ppt extension (in PowerPoint 2000), or inserting a PowerPoint Slide or PowerPoint Presentation into other programs, PowerPoint 2000 may not be registered correctly in the Windows registry. For example, you may need to re-register PowerPoint 2000 after you install the 32-bit Viewer for PowerPoint version 7.0.

To re-register PowerPoint 2000, run Powerpnt.exe with the /regserver command line switch. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  2. Click Browse.

  3. Navigate to a folder that contains Powerpnt.exe. By default, this is the following folder:

    C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office

  4. When you find the folder that contains Powerpnt.exe, click to select it, and then click Open.

  5. In the Run dialog box, go to the end of the command line and add /regserver to the end. For example, if the command line appears as follows:

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Powerpnt.exe"
    change it to the following:

    "C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Powerpnt.exe" /regserver
    Click OK.

The PowerPoint splash screen will appear for a moment, and then disappear. PowerPoint 2000 is now registered correctly. Self registration is a supported on the Windows 9x, PowerMac, Windows NT 3.51 and Windows NT 4.0 platforms.
