CAUSE

The Microsoft Office settings stored in the registry have become corrupted.

RESOLUTION

WARNING: Using Registry Editor incorrectly can cause serious problems that may require you to reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that problems resulting from the incorrect use of Registry Editor can be solved. Use Registry Editor at your own risk.

For information about how to edit the registry, view the "Changing Keys and Values" Help topic in Registry Editor (Regedit.exe) or the "Add and Delete Information in the Registry" and "Edit Registry Data" Help topics in Regedt32.exe. Note that you should back up the registry before you edit it. If you are running Windows NT, you should also update your Emergency Repair Disk (ERD).

To correct this problem, you must remove the Office settings from the registry. To remove the damaged Office registry settings, and re-register PowerPoint, follow these steps:

NOTE: The following steps remove all user-specific settings for all of the Office programs. You will have to reconfigure all user-specific settings manually.

  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.

  2. In the Open box, type Regedit, and click OK.

  3. Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER subtree until you see the following folder:

  4. HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\9.0
  5. Delete the 9.0 folder only.

  6. Quit the Registry Editor.

  7. Shut down and restart Windows.

  8. After you have returned to Windows, place your Office 2000 compact disc into your CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive.

  9. Start PowerPoint. PowerPoint will go through a brief self-repairing routine, and then open normally.

You now should be able to open the presentation.
