PPT97: Presentations Do Not Open With Web Browser

SYMPTOMS

When you view an HTML document in a Web browser and click a hyperlink that references a PowerPoint Presentation, the presentation will not open. This will only occur when the Browse In Same Window property for files of Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation type has been deselected.

NOTE:PowerPoint 97 presentations will always open up in Slideshow mode, when they are accessed by a web browser. To edit the presentation in a web browser, point to Edit, then click on Edit Slides.


CAUSE

This behavior occurs if the Browse In Same Window option is not selected in Microsoft Windows Explorer.


RESOLUTION

Enable the Browse In Same Window option. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Windows Start menu, point to Programs, and then click Windows Explorer.


  2. On the View menu, click Options.


  3. Click the File Types tab.


  4. From the Registered File Types list, click to select Microsoft PowerPoint Presentation, and then click Edit.


  5. Click to select the Browse In Same Window check box, and click OK.


  6. Click OK.


You can also open the file in Microsoft PowerPoint. To do this follow these steps:
  1. On the Windows Start menu, click Run.


  2. In the Open box, type the path and file name of the file you want to open.

    -or-

    Click Browse and select the file you want to open.


  3. Click Open.



STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

To access the Browse In Same Window property through Windows Explorer, follow these steps:

  1. On the View menu in Windows Explorer, click Options (or Folder Options) and click the File Types tab.


  2. In the Registered File Types list, click to select the Microsoft PowerPoint Presentations file type.


  3. Click Edit.


  4. Click to select or deselect the Browse In Same Window property for the selected file type.
