PPT97: Can't Find Viewer File When Using Pack and Go

SYMPTOMS

You receive the following error message when you run the Pack and Go Wizard and attempt to include the PowerPoint Viewer for Windows 95 and Windows NT:

PowerPoint cannot find the viewer file <path>\Ppview32.exe. Would you like to find it yourself?

If you click No in the message box, you receive the following message:

PowerPoint could not locate the viewer file(s). Press OK to continue packing without the viewer, or press Cancel to exit.

If you click Yes, the Open File dialog box appears. When you attempt to locate the Ppview32.exe file, you cannot find it.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when you install PowerPoint from the Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition 3.5-inch disks. The PowerPoint viewer file, Ppview32.exe, is not copied to your hard disk during setup. The Pack and Go Wizard attempts to find this file from the location where you installed Office (such as a network drive, compact disc, or 3.5-inch disk). The Pack and Go Wizard cannot decompress the viewer file from the Office 97 Professional Edition disks.

This problem does not occur if you installed PowerPoint from the Office 97 compact disc or the PowerPoint 97 disks.

RESOLUTION

Install Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer 97. The Pack and Go Wizard can now copy the Ppview32.exe file from the folder where you installed it.

NOTE: PowerPoint Viewer 97 is not the same viewer that ships with Microsoft PowerPoint 97 for Windows and Microsoft Office 97 for Windows.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem with the Microsoft Office 97 Professional Edition 3.5-inch disks.
