PPT97: Computer Hangs when Drawing, Moving, Resizing AutoShapes

SYMPTOMS

While drawing, resizing, or moving an AutoShape object, your computer stops responding (hangs) and you may have to reboot your computer.

CAUSE

This problem occurs on some computers if your graphics hardware acceleration is set to Full.

RESOLUTION

Reduce the graphics hardware acceleration, using the following steps:

1. On the Start menu, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.



2. Double-click the System icon.



3. Click the Performance tab.



4. Under Advanced Settings, click Graphics.



5. Move the slider to the left to reduce the hardware acceleration.



6. When you are asked if you want to restart your computer, click Yes.
   
   The hardware acceleration changes will take effect when your computer is restarted.

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in Microsoft PowerPoint 97.

In Windows 95, graphics hardware acceleration features can be turned off when system performance indicates incompatibility problems. Specifically, problems can occur when Windows 95 assumes a display adapter can support certain functionality that it cannot. In such cases, the side effects might be anything from small irregularities on the screen to system failure. You can disable hardware acceleration features of the display adapter so that the computer can still be used if there is a problem with the display adapter. If changing these settings fixes otherwise unexplained system crashes or performance problems, then the source of the problem is probably the display adapter. Hardware Acceleration is set to Full by default.
