PPT97: Embossed Text from Word Appears White in PowerPoint

ID: Q171173

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 For Windows
  • Microsoft Word 97 for Windows

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Embossed effect on text in a Microsoft Word 97 for Windows document and then copy that text and paste it into a PowerPoint 97 slide, that text does not appear embossed. In addition, if you insert a Word 97 table into a PowerPoint slide and format some of the text with the Embossed text effect, the Embossed effect disappears when you click outside the Word table.

In both of these cases, the text that was embossed in Word appears white in PowerPoint.

CAUSE

This is not a problem with PowerPoint. The same symptom occurs if you paste the Word document or table object into Microsoft Excel 97 or into WordPad.

When you copy and paste from a Word document into another program, or insert a Word document object into that program, what you actually get in your destination file is a picture of that Word document. When Word creates pictures of its documents to display in other programs, it replaces all embossed text with white text.

RESOLUTION

To resolve this problem, follow these steps : to paste the embossed text into PowerPoint as Formatted Text (RTF):

  1. In Microsoft Word, select the embossed text and click Copy on the Edit menu.

  2. In Microsoft PowerPoint, click Paste Special on the Edit menu.

  3. Click Formatted Text (RTF) on the list of available data types and then click OK.

Once the text is pasted as formatted text, it is no longer associated with Word for editing purposes.

To obtain the embossed effect in a Word table, add the text to the table in PowerPoint instead of in Word.

STATUS

Microsoft is researching this problem and will post new information here as it becomes available.
