PPT97: Slide Title Doesn't Appear in Hyperlink To Slide Dialog Box

ID: Q176676

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 97 For Windows
on the following platforms: NT, Win95, x86

SYMPTOMS

If you create a hyperlink within a PowerPoint 97 presentation, and you have more than 252 characters within the title field, the title field does not appear in the Hyperlink To Slide dialog box.

CAUSE

The Hyperlink To Slide dialog box is limited to 255 characters. The slide number, the period, and the space between these and the title of the slide in the list count against this total.

So, if you have a 252-character title on slide 22, it would not be available in the Hyperlink To Slide dialog box.

WORKAROUND

For slides numbered from 1 to 9, select all words that take you past the 252nd character, and then cut and paste them into a separate text frame on your slide. For slides numbered from 10 to 99, select all words that take you past the 251st character, and then cut and paste them into a separate text frame on your slide. For slides numbered from 100 to 999, select all words that take you past the 250th character, and then cut and paste them into a separate text frame on your slide.

To determine the valid length that you can use for the title, count the number of characters in the slide number and add 2 to that number, and then subtract that from 255. The result is the number of characters you can use for title text.

-or-
Avoid using slide titles that exceed this limit.
