Microsoft PowerPoint 97 For Windows
SYMPTOMS
When you insert a single Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPG) or Graphics
Interchange Format (GIF) image into a Microsoft PowerPoint 97 slide, and
then save that slide or presentation as a JPG or GIF file, only the
embedded image is saved. The entire slide that contains the image is not
saved.
WORKAROUND
To work around this problem, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Hide a Duplicate Image on the Slide
If the slide contains more than one image, PowerPoint exports the entire
slide. To duplicate the image and hide it behind the original, follow these
steps:
- Open the presentation and go to the slide in which you want to insert
the JPG or GIF image.
- Point to Picture on the Insert menu, and then click From File.
- In the Insert Picture dialog box, locate the JPG or GIF image you are
trying to insert into the slide, and then click Insert.
- With the image on the slide in your presentation, click the image to
select it.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
This creates a duplicate of the image on your slide.
- Move the copy of the image over the original so that one is hiding the
other. If you cannot position one directly over the other, do one of
two things:
- Hold the ALT key down when you move the picture to move it
incrementally.
-or-
- Resize one of the images so that it is smaller than the image that
you position over it, and then move the larger image over the
smaller one.
- On the File menu, click Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, click either "GIF (*.gif) or "JPEG File
Interchange Format (*.jpg)" in the Save As Type list. Type the name for
the file you want to save, and then click Save.
This process saves the entire slide that contains the JPG or GIF image.
Method 2: Add an AutoShape to the Slide
To add an AutoShape to the slide and hide it behind the inserted JPG or GIF
file, follow these steps:
- Open the presentation and go to the slide in which you to insert the JPG
or GIF image.
- Point to Picture on the Insert menu, and then click From File.
- In the Insert Picture dialog box, locate the JPG or GIF image you are
trying to insert, and then click Insert.
- Point to Toolbars on the View menu and click Drawing to display the
Drawing toolbar.
- On the Drawing toolbar, click any of the AutoShapes, including the
rectangle tool or the oval tool, and then draw a small shape on top of
the inserted JPG or GIF image.
- Select the shape by clicking on it. Right-click the shape to display the
shortcut menu, point to Order, and then click Send to Back.
- On File menu, click Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, click either "GIF (*.gif)" or "JPEG File
Interchange Format (*.jpg)" in the Save As Type list. Type the name
for the file you want to save, and then click Save.
Method 3: Use a Different Graphic Format
Use a graphics program like Microsoft Photo Editor (which is included in
Microsoft Office 97) to open the JPG or GIF file, save it as a different
format, and then insert it into the PowerPoint slide. To do this, follow
these steps:
- Open Microsoft Photo Editor and click Open on the File menu.
- In the Open dialog box, locate the JPG and GIF image you want to
convert to a different graphic type, and then click Open.
- When the image is open in Microsoft Photo Editor, click Save As on the
File menu.
- In the Save As dialog box, click a graphic format other than GIF (*.gif)
or "JPEG File Interchange Format (*.jpg)" in the Save As Type list, and
then click Save.
- Open the presentation and go to the slide in which you want to insert
the newly saved image.
- Point to Picture on the Insert menu, and then click From File.
- In the Insert Picture dialog box, locate the newly saved image you are
trying to insert into the slide, and then click Insert.
- On File menu, click Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, click either "GIF (*.gif)" or "JPEG File
Interchange Format (*.jpg)" in the Save As Type list. Type the name for
the file you want to save, and then click Save.
PowerPoint saves a JPG or GIF image of the slide that contains the newly
saved image, not a copy of only the image.
