PPT: Dates Greater Than 2038 Appear as Asterisk (*)

SYMPTOMS

When you save a presentation from one of the versions of PowerPoint listed at the beginning of this article in PowerPoint 4.0 format, PowerPoint saves the date incorrectly and it will be displayed as an asterisk rather than the correct date.

This behavior occurs if the following are true:

  • The system date is set to the year 2038 or greater.

    -and-


  • You inserted date fields in your presentation and chose to have them update automatically.



CAUSE

The PP7trans.dll file that PowerPoint uses to translate the file to PowerPoint 4.0 format does not handle dates greater than 2038.


WORKAROUND


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
