Changing the Default Directory

To change the default directory that appears when you click Open on the File menu, use either of the following methods.

Method 1: Manually change the default directory.

  1. On the Tools menu, click Options.

  2. Select the File Locations tab.

  3. Under File types, select Documents, and then click Modify.

  4. Change to the location you want.

Method 2: Use a macro to change the default directory.

NOTE: When you quit Word for Windows after you have modified or added these changes, you may be prompted to save the changes to the Normal template. Choose Yes to save your changes.

Macro to change the default document folder:

Sub SetDefaultFolder()
   ' Set the default directory.
   ' Note: Substitute any existing directory.
   Options.DefaultFilePath(Path:=wdDocumentsPath) = "D:\My Documents"
End Sub

Changing the Default FileOpen Extension

Use the following example Visual Basic for Applications macro to set the default FileOpen extension:

NOTE: The name of the macro must be FileOpen.

Sub FileOpen()
   Dim MyDialog As Dialog
   Set MyDialog = Dialogs(wdDialogFileOpen)
   MyDialog.Name = "*.txt"
   MyDialog.Show
End Sub
NOTE:Setting MyDialog.Name = "*.*" will display Files of Type: All Files (*.*). When using certain document formats with the Name Property of the dialog object, such as *.rtf, the Files of Type list shows All Word Documents(*.doc; *.dot; *.htm; *.html; *.url; * instead of, in this case, the expected value of Rich Text Format (*.rtf). However, this does not affect the listing in the dialog box of the specified file type. Only those file types specified by the Name Property of the dialog object will appear when the Open dialog box (on the File menu) is displayed.
