WD2000: Windows NT Task Manager Shows All SDI Documents

SYMPTOMS

If you bring up the Windows NT 4.0 Task Manager when multiple documents are open in Word 2000, the Applications tab lists each open document. However, the Processes tab lists only one instance of the Winword.exe process.

If you end the task on a single document in the Task Manager, a dialog box appears that states the following:

This Windows application cannot respond to the End Task request. It may be busy, waiting for a response from you, or it may have stopped executing.

Press Cancel to cancel and return to Windows NT.

Press End Task to close this application immediately. You will lose any unsaved information in the application.

Press Wait to give the application 5 seconds to finish what it is doing and then try to close the application again.

If you click Cancel, the single document will be closed. If you click End Task, Word and any open documents will be closed, and you will not be prompted to save the documents.

CAUSE

The Single Document Interface (SDI) allows each document to occupy its own window. Windows NT reports each SDI window as a separate application, although there is only one Winword.exe active.

MORE INFORMATION

In Windows 98, this same feature displays the Close Program with only one instance of Microsoft Word, no matter how many documents are open.
