WD2000: How to Use the HTML Paragraph Auto Spacing

The ability to automatically insert space before and after a series of paragraphs that appear one after the other, with no breaks or other items in between, is new to Word 2000. This type of paragraph formatting allows you to force spacing before and after a group of paragraphs.

In earlier versions of Word for Windows, you must create three separate styles whenever you use bulleted lists, numbered lists, and regular lists. The second and third styles are required for the first line in the list (which usually needs extra space before it) and the last line in the list (which usually needs extra space after it).

Style 1: Space before group - 14 points

Style 2: This is the text of the example paragraph. There are 14 points between the space before/after group and this text.

Style 3: Space after group

Word then automatically inserts space before and after the series of paragraphs (or lists).

To format this paragraph auto spacing, follow these steps:

1. On the Format menu, click Paragraph. Click the Indents and Spacing tab.



2. In the Spacing section, in both the Before and After boxes, select Auto. (You can also type Auto.)



3. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Compatibility tab.



4. Clear the Don't use HTML paragraph auto spacing check box, and then click OK.
