WD2000: Automatic Numbered List Fails When Started with Decimal Number

ID: Q210570

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you begin a list by typing a decimal-based number (for example, 2.1) and then you type a space, type some text, and then press ENTER, Word fails to autonumber the next line as expected, even though you have Automatic numbered lists selected.

To select Automatic numbered lists:

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.

  2. On the AutoFormat As You Type tab, click to select Automatic numbered lists.

CAUSE

When you start a numbered list with a decimal-based number, such as 2.1, you need to type a tab or at least two spaces after the number before you type your text.
