SUMMARYThis article provides general information about the phonetic guide. MORE INFORMATIONWhat Is the Phonetic Guide? The phonetic guide is a tool that allows you to insert characters to help readers pronounce words correctly. It is available on the Format menu if you enable an Asian language, such as Japanese, but you may also use it with non-Asian languages, such as French or English. How Does It Work? When you specify a phonetic guide for base text, Microsoft Word inserts the phonetic guide above the base text in the document. For example, if your document contains the expression, "tres chic," you can add a phonetic guide (for example, "tray cheek"). In the document, Word displays something like the followingTray cheekbut it actually inserts an EQ field for each phonetic guide, that looks like this: {EQ \* jc2 \* "Font:Times New Roman" \* hps12 \o\ad(\s\up 11(tray),Tres)} {EQ \* jc2 \* "Font:Times New Roman" \* hps12 \o\ad(\s\up 11(cheek),chic)} Creating a Phonetic GuideTo begin using the phonetic guide, first enable an Asian language such as Japanese:
