ID: Q211198

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SUMMARY

You can number more than one footnote or endnote with the same number in Microsoft Word by using the Footnote Reference (NOTEREF) field within a cross-reference field.

MORE INFORMATION

Publications generally require that all references to a source have the same footnote number. They may also require that the footnote be printed only once for each source.

To number a footnote reference with the same number as another, follow these steps:

  1. Place the insertion point where you want the cross-reference to appear.

  2. On the Insert menu, click Cross-reference.

  3. In the Reference type box, select Footnote or Endnote. Choose the footnote or endnote that you want to refer to, and click Insert.

  4. Click Close to close the Cross-reference dialog box.

  5. If you want the cross-reference to be in superscript like the original, follow these steps:

    1. Show Field Codes by highlighting the cross-referenced item and pressing SHIFT+F9. A field similar to the following appears:

    2. {NOTEREF _Ref0123456789}
    3. Place the insertion point before the final closing brace.

    4. Press SPACEBAR once, and type \f. The field should look similar to the following:

    5. {NOTEREF _Ref0123456789 \h \f}
    6. With the insertion point in the field, update the field by pressing F9.

      NOTE: To show the cross-reference, you may need to select the NOTEREF field and press SHIFT+F9.
