WD2000: How to Sort Files in the File Open Dialog Box

SUMMARY

By default, the Open dialog box (on the File menu, click Open) lists files in ascending order, sorted by name. This article describes how to list files in descending order, and how to sort by file size, file type, or date modified.

To change the default sort order in the Open dialog box, use one of the following methods.

NOTE: To change the view in the Open dialog box, click the arrow next to the Views icon.

Method 1: If the Open Box Is Displayed in List, Properties, or Preview View


  1. On the File menu, click Open.


  2. In the Open dialog box, click the arrow next to the Views icon, point to Arrange Icons, and then click either by Name, by Type, by Size, or by Date.

    If the files are arranged by name in ascending order, click by Name and the view will change to descending order. Do the same to change from ascending to descending for type, size, and date.


Method 2: If the Open Box Is Displayed in Details View

  1. On the File menu, click Open.


  2. Click the Name, Size, Type, or Modified button (near the top of the Open dialog box) to change the way the files are sorted.

    If the files are arranged by name in ascending order, click Name and the view will change to descending order. Do the same to change from ascending to descending for type, size, and date modified.
