WD2000: Error Message: "The Document Template Is Not Valid"

SYMPTOMS

When you try to attach a template to the current document, the following error message may appear:

The document template is not valid.

NOTE: To attach a different template or add-in to a Microsoft Word document, click Templates and Add-ins on the Tools menu.

CAUSE

This behavior occurs when you try to attach a global template or add-in, and you select a file that either

has a .dot file name extension that is in a format other than Word Document Template format.

is in a format other than Word Document Template format, such as a Word document.

MORE INFORMATION

When you create a new document in Word, it is based on the Normal template. Although you can also base a new document on another Word document, you cannot attach a Word document as a template to an existing Word document.
