WD2000: Selecting Non-Contiguous Text and Graphics by Using the Spike

SUMMARY

In Microsoft Word, you can select only contiguous text and graphics by default. That is, to select a block of text or a combination of text and graphics, the selected items must be directly above or below one another. However, Word provides a feature called the Spike that allows you to copy non-contiguous information.

To use the Spike to copy non-contiguous items and paste the items as a single block of text, follow these steps:

  1. Select the first item you want to copy. Press CTRL+F3 to cut the selection to the Spike.

    NOTE: This actually creates the AutoText entry called Spike.


  2. Select the next item you want to copy. Press CTRL+F3 to cut this selection to the Spike.


  3. Paste the Spike contents into a document. To do this, use either of the following methods:


    • Press CTRL+SHIFT+F3. (This option clears the AutoText entry.)

      -or-


    • Type spike and then press F3. (This option does not clear the AutoText Entry.)
