WD2000: Inserted Table Automatically Formatted with All Border

SYMPTOMS
When you insert a Word table, the table is inserted with an All border.
To determine the type of border that is applied to your Word table, follow these steps:
- Select your Word table. To do this, place the insertion point in a cell of the table. On the Table menu, point to Select, and then click Table.
- On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
- On the Borders tab, check to see which option is selected under Setting.
CAUSE
When you insert a table, Microsoft Word automatically applies a 1/2-point All border by default.
NOTE: There is no way to disable this functionality or to change the default border size.
WORKAROUND
To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods.
Method 1: Change the Border Formatting of Your Inserted Table
- Click the Insert Table toolbar button. Choose the number of Columns and Rows you want. The insertion point should remain in the first cell of the table.
- On the Table menu, point to Select and then click Table. This will select the entire table.
- On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.
- On the Borders tab, under Setting, click None. Ensure the Apply to box is set to Table, and then click OK. This will remove the borders from the table.
Method 2: Use the Table AutoFormat Feature
- On the Standard toolbar, click the Insert Table button. Select the number of Columns and Rows you want and click to insert the table into your Word document. The insertion point should remain in the first cell of the table.
- On the Table menu, click Table AutoFormat.
- Under Formats, click None, and then click OK.
Method 3: Draw the Table with No Borders
NOTE: Use this method to draw a table. Do not use the Insert Table button.
- On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Tables and Borders.
- On the Tables and Borders toolbar, change the Line Style to No Border. Use the Draw Table button to draw your table rows and columns.
- To make the drawn rows and columns even, place the insertion point into one of the table cells. On the Table menu, point to Select and then click Table.
The table will be selected. Then on the Table menu, point to AutoFit and then click Distribute Rows Evenly. Repeat this step for Distribute Columns Evenly.

To insert a Word table, do one of the following:
- On the Standard toolbar, click the Insert Table button and select the number of cells you want and then click to insert it into your Word document.

- On the Table menu, point to Insert and then click Table. In the Insert Table dialog box, change the Number of columns and Number of rows boxes to what size you want your table and click OK.

- On the View menu, point to Toolbars and click to select Tables and Borders. Click the Insert Table button. In the Insert Table dialog box, change the Number of columns and the Number of rows boxes to what size you want your table and then click OK.

- On the Standard toolbar (or on the Tables and Borders toolbar), click the Draw Table button and then use your mouse and draw the table you want.
