WD2000: Inserting a Break Splits "Keep with Next" Paragraphs

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a break (for example, a continuous section break) between paragraphs that contain the Keep with next paragraph formatting, the paragraphs may break across two pages instead of remaining together on one page.

CAUSE

This functionality is by design. When you insert a break between paragraphs that are formatted to stay together, Word allows you to manually override the paragraph formatting and allows the break to affect the paragraphs. If you do not manually insert a break between the paragraphs, Word does not allow a soft page break to separate the paragraphs between pages.

This functionality may occur when you manually insert any of the following breaks between paragraphs formatted with Keep with next:

Page break
Column break
Next page
Continuous
Even page
Odd page

NOTE: The Text wrapping break does not cause this problem to occur.

WORKAROUND

Insert the break before the first paragraph formatted with Keep with next.

NOTE: Do not insert the break between paragraphs formatted with Keep with next.

To apply the Keep with next paragraph format, use the following steps:

Select the paragraph(s) you want to keep together on one page.

On the Format menu, click Paragraph.

On the Line and Page Breaks tab, click to select the Keep with next check box, and then click OK.
