WD2000: Text Won't Wrap Around Text Box or Object in Header or Footer

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word, when you insert a text box or object into a header or footer, the header and footer text does not wrap around that object even though you chose a wrapping style.

NOTE: When you insert a text box, it may have a fill color that may obscure or overwrite the header and footer text. You can make the text box transparent by changing the fill color to "no fill." To do this, click to select the text box border, and then click Fill on the Drawing toolbar.

CAUSE

Word does not wrap text around objects in headers and footers because if text could wrap in the header or footer of a Word document, text in the main document would have to move out of the way.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, use one of the following methods:

• Place the text box or object at the left or right margin and format the paragraph with an indent to offset the text to the left or right of the framed object.
  
  -or-



• Insert a table into the header and place the text box or object in one cell and the text in the other cell.
  
  -or-



• Move the text box or object to another location, away from the text.
