WD2000: Equation Editor Objects Not Visible in Converted Document

ID: Q212239

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you convert a Microsoft Word document that contains equation objects to WordPerfect 5.x for Windows or MS-DOS format and then reopen the document in Word, the equation objects appear to be missing, and a zero is present to the right of the object. If Field codes view is turned on, you see the following fields:

{Embed Equation.3 \* MERGEFORMAT \s}{seq Figure \* Arabic \r0 \h}
However, if Field codes view is turned off, you do not see the equation objects.
The document appears correctly when opened in WordPerfect 5.x or 6.x. However, when you edit and save the document in WordPerfect and then reopen the document in Word, the objects appear to be missing.

NOTE: The sequence fields were present in the previous version of Microsoft Word after the conversion but were not visible in the document with Field codes view turned off.

WORKAROUND

The objects are still present in the document, but it may be difficult to locate them. Do the following to view the equations in your document:

  1. Open the converted document in Word.

  2. Double-click in the space to the left of the zero.

  3. The Equation Editor toolbar is present. Click anywhere in the document to close the Equation Editor toolbar. The equation should now be visible.

  4. Select the zero to the right of the equation, and then press the DELETE key to remove the sequence field.

NOTE: If it is difficult for you to locate the blank space and sequence field, turn on Field codes view to determine where they are located. With Field codes view on, find and delete all the sequence fields. Now locate the equation, turn off Field codes view, and then double-click the equation object to update it.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
