  • Microsoft Word 2000

SUMMARY

This article provides answers to some of the more frequently asked questions about using page borders in Microsoft Word.

MORE INFORMATION

  1. Why don't the borders that I add to my document appear on every page?

If your document contains sections, Word applies the border to the whole document, by default. The Apply to box may have been changed to a different setting when the page border was applied.

To change the borders that appear on every page of the document, follow these steps:

    1. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.

    2. On the Page Border tab, in the Apply to box, select Whole document.

    3. Click OK.

  2. Why is the border missing on one or more sides of the page when I print my document?

The minimum amount of space needed between the margin and the edge of the page varies by printer (the distance between the page border and the text may be greater than this margin width).

To correct this problem, use the following steps:
    1. On the Format menu, click Borders and Shading.

    2. On the Page Border tab, click Options.

    3. Change the Measure from box to Text.

    4. Change the Top, Bottom, Left, and Right settings to allow the page border to fit onto your page.

    5. Click OK to close the Borders and Shading Options dialog box.

    6. Click OK to close the Borders and Shading dialog box.

  3. Why are page borders lost when I convert my Word document to HTML?

When you save the document with page borders as a Web page, Word retains the page borders and shows them the next time you open the Web page document in Word. However, when you view the Web page in a browser, the page borders are not shown, because they are not supported in HTML.

For additional information about limitations of converting to HTML, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:

  4. Why are page borders lost when I convert my Word document to earlier versions of Word or to a non-Word format?

The page borders feature is not supported by Word versions earlier than Word 97 and cannot be converted.

For additional information about limitations of converting to earlier versions of Word, please see the following articles in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
Q212268 WD2000: Part 1: Limitations Converting from Word Document Format to Word 6.0/95 Format
Q216920 WD2000: Part 2: Limitations Converting from Word Document Format to Word 6.0/95 Format

  5. Can I add custom border art to the border designs that ship with Word?

No. The border art is stored as a collection of designs in a *.bdr file in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Borders subfolder.

These images are not available in individual graphics formats such as Windows Metafile (WMF), Tag Image File Format (TIFF), or other graphics formats. In addition, you cannot insert these images into a Word document by inserting from a file (on the Insert menu, point to Picture, and click From File).

  6. I applied a border to a page, but I don't see it when I am in normal view. Why not?

Objects placed in the drawing layer in Word do not appear in normal view. Word displays page borders in print preview or page layout view only.

  7. How can I get the page border to move when I adjust the margins?

You can change the page border measurement to be in relation to the text rather than the edge of the page, by following these steps:

    1. On the Format menu, click Borders And Shading.

    2. On the Page Border tab, click Options.

    3. Change the Measure from setting to Text and click OK.

The page border should now move as you adjust the margins.
