WD2000: Document Map Width Not Retained

ID: Q212285

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you close and reopen a document that contains a Document Map area, your custom Document Map width is not retained, and the width of the Document Map returns to its default size. In addition, the width of the Document Map is not carried over when you open additional documents during the same Word session.

CAUSE

Word automatically sets the Document Map area to one-fourth the width of the default window. The width of this area is not saved when you save and close a document. This is a design limitation of the Document Map.

WORKAROUND

After you open your document, resize the document map pane to the desired width.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The Document Map area is a vertical pane that extends down the left side of the document window. It displays an outline of the document headings. You can quickly move through the document by clicking any of the headings in the Document Map.

To show the Document Map, do one of the following:

  • On the Standard toolbar, click the Document Map button.

    -or-

  • On the View menu, click Document Map.

NOTE: To change the width of the Document Map, drag the right edge of the Document Map to the width that you want. When your mouse pointer is over the right edge of the Document Map, the tool tip that appears reads "Resize."
