Case 2

When you insert a date field in your document formatted with the Date style and then run the Letter Wizard (on the Tools menu, click Letter Wizard), and you select a new date format on the Letter Format tab, the new date format replaces the original date field as text.

NOTE: To run the Letter Wizard, do one of the following:
  • On the Tools menu, click Letter Wizard.

    -or-

  • On the File menu, click New. On the Letters & Faxes tab, double-click to select Letter Wizard.

CAUSE

The Letter Wizard does not insert a new or changed date as a field. It inserts it as regular text.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, choose the appropriate method for your situation:

Method 1: Use the Date Format Displayed in Letter Wizard

If you inserted a date field before you ran the Letter Wizard, use the date format that is displayed in the Date line box on the Letter Format tab.

NOTE: If you change to another date format and then change back to the original format that is displayed in this box, Word inserts the date as text instead of as a field.

Method 2: Replace Date Field After Running Letter Wizard

If you selected a new date format on the Letter Format tab in the Letter Wizard, select the date text in your letter and replace it with a date field using the following steps:
  1. Select the date text in your letter.

  2. On the Insert menu, click Date and Time.

  3. Click to select the date format you want in the Available formats list.

  4. Click to select the Update automatically check box.

  5. Click OK.
