WD2000: Tabbed Text Appears Jagged in Web Browser

ID: Q212734

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you save as a Web page a document that contains tabs to form columns, the tabs may appear to be retained, but the columns may also appear jagged when you view the document in a Web browser.

(To save as a Web page, on the File menu, click Save as Web Page.)

CAUSE

This problem occurs because Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) doesn't fully support the tab character. Word converts tab characters to HTML using non-breaking spaces.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a table to lay out your text, instead of tab characters.

For more information about tables, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type table in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.
