WD2000: Spelling and Grammar Checkers Do Not Flag Single Letters

ID: Q214185

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you check the spelling and grammar in your document, Word does not flag a single letter as a misspelled word, regardless of its case. For example, in the following sentence

Now is the time f R all good men to come to the aid...
Word does not flag either f or R as a spelling or grammar error.

CAUSE

Word does not flag a single letter, because it is considered an intentional action (for example, a heading of an index section). However, if you have two single letters, such as f and f (separated by a space), Word flags the second letter, regardless of case, because Word flags duplicate (repeated) words.

WORKAROUND

The AutoCorrect feature can be used to change an entry if it is a typical misspelling. For example, an entry of "t" can be automatically changed to "to". To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click AutoCorrect.

  2. In the Replace text as you type section, click in the Replace box and type the character you want to be replaced automatically.

  3. In the With box, type the text you want Word to insert in place of the text you entered in the Replace box.

  4. Click OK.
