WD2000: Invalid Page Fault When DocProperty "Characters" Field Is Inserted in Header or Footer

SYMPTOMS

When you insert a DocProperty "Characters" field into the header or footer of a Word document, the following error message appears:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.
If you click the Details button, the following additional information appears:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in module WINWORD.EXE at 015f:304bc9b2.
NOTE: Inserting a DocProperty "Characters" field into the body of a document does not cause an error.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, use a NumChars field to insert the number of characters contained within the document into a header or footer.

For more information about the NumChars field, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type "NumChars" in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
