WD2000: IncludePicture Field Switches Lost After Saving as HTML

ID: Q220268

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

Switches used with the IncludePicture field, such as "\s" (maintain graphic size) or "\d" (do not store graphic data in document), are lost after you save a document as HTML and then close and reopen the document.

CAUSE

The switches are either not needed or not valid in an HTML document.

WORKAROUND

If the switches must be preserved, save a copy of the file in another file format, such as Word Document (*.doc).

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

The switches can be inserted into the field manually, and they work properly during the current editing session, but they are lost if the document is closed and reopened.

The reason for this is that while you are editing a document, it is kept in memory in the Word document format. When the file is saved, the document is saved to disk in the file format you want. However, when the document is reopened for editing, it is first converted to Word document format and then placed in the computer's memory (RAM).

Word can convert to and from other file formats, but it is unable to edit a document unless it is in the Word document format.
