WD2000: Underlining Text Causes Picture to Be Underlined

ID: Q220283

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you click Select All on the Edit menu and underline the text in your document, any pictures in your document may also be underlined.

NOTE: The underline can also occur when a picture is inserted with the text in a text box or table cell. The underline is not affected by the text direction.

CAUSE

When a picture is inserted into a Word document, the picture is inserted as a character in line with the text and is treated the same as any other text character. Therefore, if you underline the selected text, the picture is also underlined.

WORKAROUND

After you apply the underline to the text in your document, use one of the following methods to work around this behavior in Word:

Method 1: Change the Picture Wrapping Style

To change the wrapping style of your picture, do the following steps:
  1. Click the picture that is underlined.

  2. On the Format menu, click Picture.

  3. On the Layout tab, click a wrapping style other than In line with text.

  4. Click OK.

Method 2: Remove the Underline from the Picture

To remove the underline from your picture, do the following steps:
  1. Click the picture that is underlined.

  2. On the Format menu, click Font.

  3. On the Font tab, change the Underline style box to None and click OK.
