WD2000: Adding Item to Text Numbered List Causes Previous Item to Indent

ID: Q220312

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

After you copy and paste a numbered list from a text editor (for example, Notepad) into a Word document, when you press ENTER to continue the numbered list, the last numbered list item is indented.

For example, after you press ENTER to continue your numbered list, the list may appear as follows:

   1. Apples
   2. Bananas
      3. Peaches

WORKAROUND

Use one of the following methods to work around this problem.

Method 1: Renumber the List (Recommended)

In Word, select the numbered list and reapply the number format, using the following steps:
  1. Select the numbered list.

  2. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.

  3. On either the Numbered tab or Outline Numbered tab, click to select the style of numbering you want, and then click OK.

NOTE: If you want to customize the numbered list, click Customize before you click OK to make any changes to the numbering style.

Method 2: Use CTRL+Z

  1. After you press ENTER to type the next numbered item in the list, press CTRL+Z. This removes the indent from the next numbered list item and removes the number from the next line.

  2. Type in the correct number for the item, press the TAB key, and then type the item.

Repeat these steps for each new numbered item you want to add to this numbered list.

Method 3: Press BACKSPACE

  1. After you press ENTER to type the next numbered item in the list, press BACKSPACE three times. This removes the indent from the next numbered list item and removes the number from the next line.

  2. Type in the correct number for the item, press TAB and then type the item.

Repeat these steps for each new numbered item you want to add to this numbered list.
