WD2000: Invalid Page Fault Pasting 2 or More OLE Objects Using Clipboard

ID: Q220422

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you copy, separately, two or more OLE objects in a Word document and then choose to paste the objects one at a time using the Office Clipboard, the following error message may appear:

This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down.

If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
When you click Details, the following message is displayed:
WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in SHELL32.DLL at 015f:7fd01f78.
NOTE: The actual memory address may vary.

CAUSE

This problem occurs when the following are true:

  • You have an object that is linked via a UNC (universal naming convention) path. For example, a UNC path uses a format similar to the following:
    \\MyShare\MyFolder\MyFile.Doc

  • The object is linked to the UNC-connected file source. For example, viewing field codes for a linked Excel worksheet (Press ALT+F9) in Word appears as follows:
    {LINK Excel.Sheet.8 "\\\\MYSHARE\MYFOLDER\MYEXCELFILE.XLS" "" \a \p}

  • The object is Inline with text.

To make an object Inline with text:

    1. Click to select the object.

    2. On the Format menu, click Object, Picture, or the object type you have selected.

    3. On the Layout tab, click to select Inline with text.

    4. Click OK.

  • You copy the linked, inline object.

  • You copy another object.

  • You then try to paste the objects stored in the Office Clipboard.

WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, copy and paste one object at a time instead of using the Office Clipboard to copy multiple objects at a time.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
