WD2000: Index Is Updated Incorrectly with Modified Page Numbering

SYMPTOMS

If you use the Insert menu to insert both page numbers and an index into your document, you may see odd behavior when you change the page number to start at anything other than 1. The page numbers and index numbers do not display the same number. The index numbers are correct, but the page numbers start at 1 instead of the number you specified.

NOTE: This problem does not occur until you update the index after changing the starting page number to anything other than 1.


CAUSE

This behavior is caused by the section breaks that Microsoft Word inserts into a document automatically when you insert an index from the Insert menu.


WORKAROUND

To work around this problem, insert a continuous section break before the index, and then reformat your starting page number and update your index, using the following steps:

  1. On the View menu, click Normal.


  2. Place the insertion point above the Section Break (Continuous) at the top of your index.


  3. On the Insert menu, click Break.


  4. In the Break dialog box, click to select Continuous and click OK.


  5. On the Insert menu, click Page Numbers.


  6. In the Page Numbers dialog box, click Format.


  7. In the Page Number Format dialog box, click to select Start at and change the Start at box to the number you want your document to start numbering at.


  8. Click OK to close the Page Number Format dialog box.


  9. Click Close to close the Page Numbers dialog box.

    NOTE: Do not click OK, because this inserts an additional set of page numbers into your document.


  10. Select your index and press F9 to update it.


The page numbers of your document now match the page numbers contained in your index.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
