WD2000: Table Column Width Increases Instead of Text Wrapping to Next Line

ID: Q220499

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

A table column increases in width rather than wrapping the text to the next line if the following are true:

  • The table property Automatically resize to fit contents is selected.

  • The cell property to wrap text is not selected.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design in this version of Word. A new feature automatically resizes table columns to fit text or graphics. If you type a word that is longer than the width of the column, the column adjusts to accommodate the text.

WORKAROUND

If you do not want your columns to resize when you type, do the following:

  1. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.

  2. On the Table tab, click Options.

  3. In the Table Options dialog box, clear the Automatically resize to fit contents check box.

MORE INFORMATION

NOTE: Two other options affect this feature:

  • If you use the AutoFit to Window option (on the Table menu, point to AutoFit), the Automatically resize to fit contents check box is reselected and you must clear it again.

  • When the cell property for wrapping text is selected, it causes the text to wrap, over-riding Automaticaly resize to fit contents. (On the Table menu, click Table Properties, and click the Cell tab. Click Options to see the Wrap text check box.)
