WD2000: Cannot View Full Macro Name in Customize Dialog Box

ID: Q220646

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000
  • Microsoft PowerPoint 2000
  • Microsoft Outlook 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you view a macro or command on the Commands tab in the Customize dialog box (on the Tools menu, click Customize), the macro or command name is truncated. For example, if you have a macro called

Normal.NewMacros.ThisIsAMacroWithAVeryLongName
you may see something similar to this:
Normal.NewMacros.ThisIsAMacroW

CAUSE

There is no horizontal scroll bar in the Commands dialog box, and the dialog box is not sizable. The dialog box displays approximately 30 characters.

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior and have the full macro name appear in the Commands list, shorten the module or macro name so that it is no more than about 30 characters. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, point to Macro and then click Macro.

  2. In the Macro name list, select the macro you want to rename.

  3. Click Edit.

  4. Shorten the sub routine name. For example, if the name is "Sub ThisIsMacroWithAVeryLongName ()", rename it to "Sub TestMacroName ()".

  5. Click the File menu and select Close and Return to Microsoft Word.

NOTE: You cannot rename built-in Word commands.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
