CAUSE

The File Locations Startup setting points to the same location as the User Templates or WorkGroup Templates setting.

There is an incorrect BUFFERS line setting in the Config.sys file.

WHAT TO TRY

The File Locations Startup setting points to the same location as the User Templates or WorkGroup Templates setting.

(To view the Startup setting, click Options on the Tools menu and select the File Locations tab.)

For example, this error occurs if both your User Templates setting and your Startup setting point to C:\WINWORD\TEMPLATE.

Use the following steps to change the Startup setting location to the Startup subdirectory:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the File Locations tab.

  2. In the File types list, select Startup and then click the Modify button.

  3. In the Modify Location dialog box, select the Startup directory and then click OK.

  4. NOTE: The following is the default Startup directory path:

For a computer that is not using Windows User Profiles:
    C:\Windows\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup

For a computer that has multiple User Profiles enabled:

    C:\Windows\Profiles\<Username>\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\Startup

There is an incorrect BUFFERS line setting in the Config.sys file.

To correct this problem, use a text editor to view and edit the following line of the Config.sys file, if it exists:
BUFFERS=<A numerical value>
NOTE: Windows versions 95 and later do not require a Config.sys file but will read it if one exists. If the BUFFERS statement is set too low, the problem could exist on a Windows 95 and later platform. To resolve this, you can set BUFFERS=30, or you can remove the BUFFERS statement from the Config.sys file and Windows will set the default BUFFERS on a Windows 95 and later platform.
