ERROR MESSAGE

When you scroll through or print a document that contains a graphic, the following error message appears, and the image appears on screen and prints as a 1-inch square box with an X inside it.

Word cannot open the graphics file.
NOTE: Microsoft Office 2000 has built-in functionality that allows you to get more information about difficult-to-troubleshoot alerts or error messages. If you want to enable this functionality for this and other error messages in Microsoft Office 2000, please download the Microsoft Office 2000 Customizable Alerts file from the Microsoft Office Update Web site at the following address:

NOTE: If you reached this article by clicking the Web Info button in an error message, you already have Customizable Alerts enabled.

CAUSE

The link to the graphic is broken--for example, when you move either the graphic or the document, but not both, to a new directory.

The graphic is linked, but the picture is not saved in the document.

WHAT TO TRY

For All Causes

Method 1: Break the link so that the graphic is an embedded object. To do this, do the following:
  1. Click on the graphic to select the link.

  2. On the Edit menu, click Links.

  3. Click Change Source.

  4. Select the new location of the graphic, and click Open.

  5. Click Update Now and then click OK.

Method 2: Display fields codes and modify the path inside the field code braces so that it shows the correct path, and then press F9 to update the field.

NOTE: You can also change the source if you click Links on the Edit menu. However, if you use this method when the image has been cropped, the image reverts to its original size.

For additional information about how changing the source of a link may resize the object, please see the following article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base:
