ERROR MESSAGE

When you open a file, Word may fail with the following error message:

Word failed reading from this file <filename>. Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry.

CAUSE

The network connection from which you opened the file has been disconnected before Word fully opened and paginated the document.

The disk from which you opened the file has been removed before Word fully opened and paginated the document.


WHAT TO TRY

The network connection has been disconnected.

Close Word and restore the network connection. After you have restored your network connection, start Word and then open the file.

The disk has been removed.

Reinsert the disk. When any of the error messages are displayed as listed in Case 2 of the "More Information" section of this article, insert the disk that you opened the file from and then press ENTER. Word will continue to read from the file and finish opening and paginating the document.

MORE INFORMATION

This problem occurs in either of the following cases.

Case 1

When you open a file from a network location, the following error message may be displayed:
There is an unrecoverable disk error on file <filename>. The disk you're working on has a media problem that prevents Word from using it.
Try the following:
* Try formatting another disk.
* Save the document to another disk.
When you click OK, the following error message is displayed:
Word failed reading from this file (<filename>). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry.
After your network connection has been restored and you click OK, the following error message is displayed:
Word has lost data due to a bad network connection or missing floppy. Documents relying on this data are going to be saved and then closed.
Word then saves your open file as "Rescued Document <number>.txt" and then closes it.

NOTE: The file "Rescued Document <number>.txt" is saved to the root of your hard disk. This file should be discarded, because it may not contain the contents of your document.

Case 2

When you open a file from a disk, Windows may return the following error message:
Error Reading Disk in Drive A:

Please Insert Disk <DiskName>
With Serial Number <####-####> in Drive A:
When you press ESC to cancel the error message, Word displays the following error message:
Check the drive to make sure the door is closed and it contains the correct disk or CD.
When you click OK, Word displays the following error message:
Word failed reading from this file (<filename>). Please restore the network connection or replace the floppy disk and retry.
