SYMPTOMS

When you open a Word 2000 document containing a link in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, the following error message appears:

Error! Not a valid link.

CAUSE

The result of the LINK field is lost when a Word 2000 document is opened in Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

WORKAROUND

To retain the result of a LINK field when you open your document in Microsoft Word 98 Macintosh Edition, save your document in Word 2000 as Rich Text Format (*.rtf). Then open the Rich Text Format version of your document in Word 98 Macintosh Edition.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
