WD2000: Word Flashes on Windows Taskbar When You Cancel "Choose Data Source" in MS Query

SYMPTOMS

When you click Cancel to close the Choose Data Source dialog box, Microsoft Query is not closed and Microsoft Word "flashes" on the Windows taskbar.

NOTE: To view the Choose Data Source dialog box, do one of the following:

  • On the Database toolbar (on the View menu, point to Toolbars and click Database), click Insert Database. In the Database dialog box, click Get Data. In the Open Data Source dialog box, click MS Query.

    -or-

  • In the Mail Merge Helper (on the Tools menu, click Mail Merge), click Get Data and then click Open Data Source. In the Open Data Source dialog box, click MS Query.


CAUSE

When you click Cancel to quit the Choose Data Source dialog box, Microsoft Query doesn't return the "focus" to Microsoft Word.


WORKAROUND

Press ALT+TAB or click Microsoft Word on the Windows taskbar to switch back to Word and click OK to the following error message:

Word could not re-establish a DDE connection to Microsoft Query to complete the current task.
After you click OK to the error message in Word, Microsoft Query closes.


STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
