WD2000: "Before" Line Spacing Not Applied on Some Paragraphs

ID: Q224686

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2000, after you format a paragraph to have line spacing of 6 points before and 6 points after the paragraph, the 6 points of line spacing appears before the first paragraph only. It does not appear on any of the subsequent paragraphs, even though the Format Paragraph dialog box shows that you have applied this formatting. This functionality differs from Microsoft Word 97, which always applied 6 points of line spacing before the subsequent paragraphs.

CAUSE

This functionality is built into Word 2000 to preserve and maintain formatting when converting documents to and from Hypertext Markup Language (HTML), the Web page format.

RESOLUTION

To have Word display the 6 points of line spacing before subsequent paragraphs, use either of the following methods:

  • Select the Don't use HTML paragraph auto spacing compatibility option. To do this, click Options on the Tools menu, click the Compatibility tab, and then click to select the Don't use HTML paragraph auto spacing check box.

    -or-

  • Change the Recommended options for setting to Microsoft Word 97. To do this, click Options on the Tools menu, click the Compatibility tab, and then select Microsoft Word 97 in the Recommended options for list.
