WD2000: Inserted Sound Does Not Play in Web Browser

SYMPTOMS

In Microsoft Word 2000, when you insert a sound on a Web page and then preview the page in a Web browser, the sound does not play.


CAUSE

You may have inserted the sound as a static object. In other words, when you open your Web page in a Web browser, you cannot click the object to play the sound.

For example, this problem occurs when you do the following steps:

  1. On the Insert menu, click Object.


  2. On the Create from File tab, click Browse and select the sound that you want for your Web page.


  3. Click Insert.


  4. Click OK.


  5. On the File menu, click Web Page Preview.



RESOLUTION

To add a sound to your Web page, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Add a Sound Hyperlink

To add a sound to a Web page that is activated only when you click an object, follow these steps:
  1. On the Insert menu, click Object.


  2. On the Create New tab, click to select Wave Sound, and click OK.

    NOTE: The Windows Sound Recorder should be displayed.


  3. On the File menu, click Exit & Return to <filename>.


  4. Click to select the sound icon.


  5. On the Insert menu, click Hyperlink.


  6. In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click File (listed under Browse for).


  7. In the Link to File dialog box, click to select the sound file you want and then click OK.

    NOTE: You may need to change the Files of type box to All Files (*.*) to see the sound file you want.


  8. In the Insert Hyperlink dialog box, click OK.


  9. On the File menu, click Web Page Preview.


NOTE: For visitors to your Web page to hear your sound, they must have a sound card installed on their computer and must have a sound application installed (for example, Windows Media Player) that supports the sound format of the file you inserted. You can insert sound files in WAV, MID, AU, AIF, RMI, SND, and MP2 (MPEG audio) formats.

Method 2: Add a Background Sound

To add a background sound that plays when your Web page is opened by a Web browser, follow these steps:
  1. On the View menu, point to Toolbars, and then click Web Tools.


  2. Click Sound on the Web Tools toolbar.


  3. In the Sound box, type the path or URL of the sound file you want to use. Or click Browse, select the file, and then click Open.


  4. In the Loop box, type a number representing how many times you want the background sound to be repeated after the page is opened.


  5. Click OK.


NOTE: To turn off the background sound while you are creating your Web page, click the Design Mode button. To turn the sound back on, click Exit Design Mode.

When a visitor to your site opens your Web page, the sound plays automatically. The background sound plays automatically every time your page is opened or refreshed.

NOTE: For visitors to hear background sound, they must have a sound card installed on their computers and their Web browser must support the sound format of the file you inserted. You can insert sound files in WAV, MID, AU, AIF, RMI, SND, and MP2 (MPEG audio) formats.
