WD2000: Cannot Retain Number Underline Color Different from Number Color Opening in Word 97

ID: Q224720

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you open in Word 97 a Word 2000 document that contains a numbered list with a different number underline color than the number color, the different underline color is changed to the color of the number.

This problem occurs even when you turn on the Disable features not supported by Word 97 option in Word 2000 before creating the document.

CAUSE

The functionality of not retaining a different number underline color from the number color is by design in Microsoft Word 2000 when you open your document in Word 97. However, when you have the Disable features not supported by Word 97 option selected, Word does not make the underline color option unavailable when you customize a numbered list.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.

MORE INFORMATION

Some new features in Microsoft Word 2000 are not supported in Word 97. To make sure that documents appear correctly in Word 97, formatting that is not supported can be removed and replaced with formatting that is supported.

For example, when you select the Disable features not supported by Word 97 check box (on the Tools menu, click Options, and then click to select the Save tab), decorative underlines are removed and regular underlines are added, so that the document is correctly formatted when opened in Word 97. After you select this check box, features that are not supported by Word 97 are made unavailable for use in the document.

For more information about disabling features not supported by Word 97, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type What happens when I turn off features not supported by Word 97? in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

To change the underline color of a numbered list in Word 2000, do the following steps:

  1. On the Format menu, click Bullets and Numbering.

  2. Select any Numbered (or Outline Numbered) style, and click Customize.

  3. In the Customize Numbered List dialog box (or Customize Outline Numbered List dialog box), click Font.

  4. Change the Underline style box to the underline you want.

  5. In the Underline color box, select the color you want.
