WD2000: Cannot Move Table in Header or Footer

ID: Q224730

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you try to use the table move handle to move a table in the header or footer of your Word document, the table appears to move but does not actually move.

For more information about positioning a table, click Microsoft Word Help on the Help menu, type "How do I move a table?" in the Office Assistant or the Answer Wizard, and then click Search to view the topics returned.

CAUSE

This functionality is by design in Microsoft Word 2000. The table move handle has no effect when the table is in a header or footer.

WORKAROUND

To position your table in a header or footer, use one of the following methods:

Method 1: Use Table Properties.

  1. Place the insertion point anywhere in the table.

  2. On the Table menu, click Table Properties.

  3. On the Table tab, click to select Around under the Text wrapping section, and then click Positioning.

  4. In the Table Positioning dialog box, make the changes you want to position the table in the header or footer.

  5. Click OK to close the Table Positioning dialog box.

  6. Click OK to close the Table Properties dialog box.

Method 2: Press ENTER.

Place the insertion point before the table and press ENTER as many times as needed to move the table down vertically to the position you want.
