WD2000: Picture Editor Change Appears to Be Ignored

ID: Q224770

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

When you change your picture editor in Word and then try to edit an existing picture in a document, the new picture editor is not used for editing the picture. Instead, the picture editor used is the one used to edit the picture previously.

For example:

  1. You edit a picture in a document using Microsoft Word as your picture editor.

  2. You then change the picture editor to Microsoft Photo Editor.

  3. When you edit the picture again (on the Edit menu, click Edit Picture), Microsoft Word is used as the picture editor instead of Microsoft Photo Editor.

NOTE: To change the default program for editing imported graphics, follow these steps:
  1. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click the Edit tab.

  2. In the Picture editor box, click the program you want to use to modify imported graphics, and then click OK.

CAUSE

This behavior is by design. When you edit a picture with a picture editor, the picture becomes associated with its editor.

For example, if you edit a picture using Microsoft Word and press ALT+F9 to view the field code of the picture, you see the following field:

{ EMBED Word.Picture.8 }

If you edit a picture using Microsoft Photo Editor and then press ALT+F9 to view the field code of the picture, you see the following field:

{ EMBED MSPhotoEd.3 }

WORKAROUND

To work around this behavior, you must unlink the picture field to change the picture editor used for a picture previously edited in a document.

To unlink the picture, do the following:

  1. Click to select the picture.

  2. Press CTRL+SHIFT+F9.

NOTE: After performing the steps above, change the picture editor to the picture editor you want to use before you try to edit the picture.

STATUS

Microsoft has confirmed this to be a problem in the Microsoft products listed at the beginning of this article.
