WD2000: No Right-Click Access to the Thesaurus in Lists

ID: Q229749

The information in this article applies to:
  • Microsoft Word 2000

SYMPTOMS

You are unable to use the right mouse button to bring up the shortcut menu to access Synonyms (from the Thesaurus) when your selection is in a numbered or bulleted list or a table.

CAUSE

Shortcut menus are context-sensitive, which means that Word determines which menu to open based on what is selected when you click with the mouse. When your selection or word is in a bulleted or numbered list, the Bullets and Numbering list options are displayed on the menu.

WORKAROUND

You can add the Thesaurus to the Bullets and Numbering list shortcut menu by following these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.

  2. On the Toolbars tab, click Shortcut Menus. The Shortcut Menus toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Commands tab in the Customize dialog box.

  4. Under Categories, click Tools.

  5. Under Commands, click and drag Thesaurus onto the Text button on the Shortcut Menus toolbar (it will drop down). In the drop-down list, click Lists and drop the Thesaurus in the location you want on the list.

You can add the Thesaurus to the Tables list shortcut menu by following these steps:

  1. On the Tools menu, click Customize.

  2. On the Toolbars tab, click Shortcut Menus. The Shortcut Menus toolbar appears.

  3. Click the Commands tab in the Customize dialog box.

  4. Under Categories, click Tools.

  5. Under Commands, click and drag Thesaurus onto the Table button on the Shortcut Menus toolbar (it will drop down). In the drop-down list, click Table Text and drop the Thesaurus in the location you want on the list.
